778 Iranian prisoners abroad released last year

TEHRAN, April 16 (MNA) – 778 Iranian nationals who had been imprisoned in foreign countries were released over the past Iranian calendar year which ended on March 20, a Foreign Ministry official announced on Thursday.

Out of 3,400 Iranian prisoners in foreign countries, 778 Iranian nationals, mostly imprisoned in the Persian Gulf Arab states and Southeast Asian countries, were released following Iranian diplomats’ meetings, consultations, and correspondence with foreign officials, Hamid-Reza Shakeri, director of the Foreign Ministry department for Iranian expatriates affairs said.

The diplomats have also managed to reduce sentences for a number of Iranian prisoners, he said.

Some of these people had been arrested in Germany and France on baseless charges of involvement in business deals which allegedly violated the UN Security Council’s sanctions against Iran, he added.
