Algerian president declares future amendments to constitution

RABAT, April 16 (Itar-Tass) -- President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, of
Algeria, speaking on national television Friday, announced forthcoming
amendments to the constitution "to strengthen democracy in the country."
According to him, "progress made by Algeria is obvious to all." At the
same time, said Bouteflika, "measures will soon be taken to improve the
work of the state apparatus."
Since the beginning of this year Algeria has seen a series of
demonstrations for a better quality of life and genuine democratic
reforms. The Opposition insists on a change of the political leadership
and the implementation of socio-economic policies taking into account the
needs and aspirations of the Algerian people.
