Thailand-Japan join forces to promote energy-saving model in commercial buildings

BANGKOK, April 15 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Energy's Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency has cooperated with a Japanese organization to work out on promoting an energy-saving model in commercial buildings.

Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency Director-General Krairit Nilkuuha said that his department, in cooperation with the Japanese New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), is undertaking the initiative to promote and demonstrate the energy saving model in local commercial buildings.

Krairit noted that a pilot project will be implemented at Bangkok’s Amari Watergate Hotel, where NEDO will provide, install and transfer energy-saving technologies and equipment to the hotel, with an initial budget of some 100 million baht, 87 million baht to be sponsored by NEDO and the remaining 13 million baht to be financed by the Amari Hotel.

Under the project, the hotel will introduce energy-saving equipment and systems, including high-efficiency chillers, variable air volume systems and the Building Energy Management System (BEMS) within November 2011. The Amari Watergate Hotel, located in the heart of the Thai capital, is a 34-storey building covering a total area of 63,600 square-meters.

Krairit said the pilot project is expected to help the Amari Watergate Hotel reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases by up to 1,600 tons annually, which will save 9.7 million baht or 17 per cent of the hotel’s energy expenses. Furthermore, if successful, the same technologies would be installed at some other 1,600 buildings across Thailand, which would not only boost the country's energy-saving, but also reduce emissions of greenhouse gases nationwide of up to one million tons annually.

Krairit acknowledged that the project will also lead to advance technological transfer to Thailand and boost the Thai economy by stimulating domestic production of parts and equipments of these technologies, as a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between his department and NEDO has stated on transfer of the ownership of these technologies to his agency after the project is completed.
