Full of joy remained on third-day Songkran celebrations
BANGKOK, April 15 (TNA) - Full of joy remained on Friday, the last day of the Songkran water festival on the famous Khao San Road in Bangkok, as shops are open to welcome a large number of tourists.
Piyabut Jiwaramonaikul, president of Khao San Road's business operators association, said that the number of tourists who celebrated this year's Songkran Festival along the road was higher than last year, or more than 30,000 people a day, 70 per cent of them cooperated with alcohol-free campaigns. This year's Songkran celebrations on Khao San Road began on April 12 and will end Friday evening.
At Bangkok’s City Hall, people arrived at its front yard to bathe and worship Phra Buddha Sihing, an important Buddha image of Thailand, as the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had placed the Buddha image in front of its headquarters for the public worship as part of nationwide celebrations of the traditional Thai New Year this week. The Buddha image had been in front of City Hall since April 12 and was brought back to the Putthaisawan Throne Hall in the National Museum at 3pm Friday afternoon--though the Songkran celebrations in front of the City Hall would continue until 11pm.
At nearby Phra Che-tu-phon Temple, Thai and foreign tourists were amazed with a traditional Songkran celebration event organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), as stalls of food products from all Thai regions and cultural shows of all parts of Thailand were displayed. The Songkran celebrants could also worship the Buddha images of individuals’ birthdays and built sand pagodas.
Meanwhile, Dr Suphan Srithamma, Spokesperson of the Thai Ministry of Public Health, warned people not to take unhygienic food products and drinking water during the Songkran Festival, citing those without certification by Thailand's Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to prevent themselves from diarrhea, food poisoning, cholera, dysentery and typhoid.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT), on the other hand, announced that after the Songkran long holiday, SRT would increase the number of trains on northern and northeastern routes by 12 a day, from 250, to carry people who would return to Bangkok from April 16-18, saying that SRT expects the number of train passengers to increase by 40,000 people a day during the post-Songkran celebration period.
