Thai authorities strictly inspect safety of public vehicles during "Songkran" travelling

BANGKOK, April 15 (TNA) - Thailand's Department of Land Transport Director-General Tienchote Chongpeepien says that his department has sent out inspectors to undertake thorough inspections of inter-provincial public buses to ensure safety of passengers travelling back to their hometowns during this year's Songkran Festival.

Tienchote revealed that thousands of inter-provincial passengers buses have been inspected over the past week and at least 98 of them have been found violating traffic laws, with most cases involving poor equipment and other structural conditions of the buses, paperwork violations and failure to serve passengers on legalised vehicles and to run on licensed routes. All of the violated vehicles have been fined.

Tienchote said that his department has strictly inspected public buses and cars and their drivers, insisting that all drivers of public buses and cars need to undergo alcohol breath tests and they have to come out clean or "zero alcohol", and that each inter-provincial bus driver is not allowed to drive longer than four consecutive hours and they have to have at least a half-an-hour rest in every four hours before they can continue driving.

According to the senior Thai transport ministry official, passengers who are unfairly treated by drivers or other workers of public buses or cars can call his department's passenger protection center hotline, 1584, 24 hours to file their complaints so that legal action would be taken against the offenders if they were found guilty by transport authorities.(TNA)
