Thai and Lao people join Songkran celebrations
MUKDAHAN, April 15 (TNA) - Thai and Lao people in border communities have joined "Songkran" or traditional New Year celebrations for a shared tradition of the two close neighboring countries.
Songkran celebrants from Thailand's northeastern Mukdahan Province, led by Deputy Governor Sommai Preechasilp, have travelled across the border to take part in the traditional New Year celebrations in Laos’ Savannakhet Province. The Thai delegation was received by Lao’s Vice President Bounnhang Vorachith and Savannakhet’s officials on Thursday. Both Thai and Lao Songkran celebrants then performed bathing on 1,000 Buddha images before cruising along local streets for a water-splashing fun.
Other Thai-Lao border communities, Thailand's northeastern Nakhon Phanom Province and Laos' Khammouane also participated in a merit-making ceremony to collect donation for Buddhist monasteries. The donations will be offered to temples which house iconic pagodas, Phanom pagoda in Nakhon Phanom and Kotabong in Khamouane. The donated funds will also be used for renovation works of the Thai and Lao temples, demonstrating strong ties and cooperation between the two neighbouring Buddhist nations.
The annual celebrations of the tradition New Year in Laos officially lasts for three days, roughly the same time as those in Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar, as the Southeast Asian neighbours share the common solar calendar to celebrate the yearly Maha Songkran Festival. Songkran celebrations are, however, officially fixed on the Thai calendar from April 13-15. (TNA)
