MINISTER: ALL RARE ANIMAL TRAFFICKING CASES MUST BE TAKEN TO COURT

Medan, N Sumatra, Aug 30 (ANTARA) - Forestry Minister MS Kaban has said that all cases of rare animal trading must be taken to court.
"We call on law enforcers not to freeze cases on environment crimes such as stealing or killing rare animals," the minister said here on Saturday.
He said that there should be no cases of halting the process of environment crimes because it had been regulated by the law.
Therefore, all law enforcers should continue the legal process of environment crimes to court. "The legal process must proceed and must not be stopped," he added.
The Sumbagut Protected Wild Animal Coalition (KPSLD) said that weak law enforcement was one of the factors which caused the extinction of wild animals such as the Sumatran tigers in Indonesia.
"Our law enforcement is weak. It is proved that until now no one of the suspected wild animal traffickers has been taken to court," said Rido, member of the Sumbagut KPSLD.
The North Sumatra Nature Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has disclosed a number of wild animal trafficking cases in the last eight months.
Among the eight cases are two tigers (still alive) in Binjai city, tiger leather in Karo district, two tigers being traded in Namorambe (Deli Serdang district) and the body parts or organs of tigers confiscated from a number of shops in Pancur Batu (Medan).
