Over one million people use public buses during Songkran Festival

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) - Thailand's Department of Land Transport Deputy Director-General Atsathai Rattanadilok na Phuket reported on Thursday that a total of 1,196,517 people had used inter-provincial public busses at all main terminals in Bangkok, including Mo Chit, Ekkamai and Sai-tai, over the past six days, from April 8-13, to travel back to their hometowns.

Atsathai said that, totally, 41,995 trips of provincial buses were recorded during the April 8-13 period, including 34,608 regular trips and 5,657 extra trips to serve higher demand; while additional 1,730 trips provided by non public bus operators were also allowed during the period.

Atsathai also acknowledged that his department and three ad hoc passenger protection centers in Bangkok had received a total of 385 complaints filed by passengers of the public busses, or some 64 complaints a day on average. The complaints included refusing to take passengers for a bus ride, bus drivers' failure to stop picking up or dropping off passengers at bus stops and reckless driving.

Meanwhile, the senior Thai official urged passengers to make unreserved reports of misconducts of public bus workers, namely drunk driving and improper treatments to passengers, through the passenger protection centers via his department's hotline, 1584, around the clock. (TNA)
