Songkran celebrants urged on a health note

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) - As nationwide celebrations to mark the Thai “Songkran” New Year Festival officially entered their second day on April 14, authorities have stepped up health concerns for the public.

Dr. Paijit Warachit, Permanent Secretary for Public Health, gave the words of caution on Thursday afternoon, citing possible illnesses during this week’s summer water festival, namely colds, pneumonia and red eyes.

Dr. Paijit, also second vice chairman of Thailand's ad hoc road safety command centre during this year's Songkran Festival, insisted that the fast-changing weather currently could lead to sickness for those staying outdoors, and therefore, urging people to avoid being soaked in water for extended periods, with adults advised to be splashed within a 4-hour limit and children just less than an hour.

The Thai senior health official also warned the public against the use of unclean water for splashing due to possible contraction of water-borne diseases and suggested hygienic practices and warm clothes once getting back home. (TNA)
