Authorities rein in on mishaps during Thailand's Songkran Festival

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) - Measures to reduce road accidents during Thailand’s Songkran Festival this year have been in good place nationwide--aimed to ensure public safety for the ongoing weeklong traditional New Year celebrations.
Speaking of the nationwide road safety campaign, Thai Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit acknowledged a positive sign in the fall of reported accidents this year, as Songkran casualties had so far dropped below those of last year.
Jurin insisted, however, that authorities nationwide will continue to work under a triple road safety framework comprising the strict enforcement of anti-alcohol laws among motorists, the prevention of road accidents through setting up rest stops on major highways and roads, particularly in areas at high risk, and the coordination of emergency services among agencies concerned at all levels.
The public health minister said he has also ordered the Emergency Medical Institute of Thailand (EMIT) and provincial authorities concerned to report updated daily toll of Songkran fatalities and injuries nationwide to his ministry every morning; while all hospitals have been urged to provide 24-hour services during this week's Songkran festivity.
