Thailand's Songkran death toll rises to 116

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Interior's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said in its updated report published on Thursday that death toll during the first three days of the “seven dangerous days” of this year's Songkran Festival, from April 11-13, has reached 116 and 1,760 others have been injured in 1,626 road accidents across the country.
According to the official report, on April 13 alone, 733 road accidents were recorded across Thailand, killing 57 people and injuring 784 others.
Paijit Warachit, Permanent Secretary for Public Health and Vice Chairman of Thailand's ad hoc road safety centre during the Songkran Festival, said that drunk driving and speeding were major causes of the road accidents during the first three-day traditional Thai New Year celebrations nationwide.
