Medvedev urges to prevent was on Korean Peninsula
MOSCOW, April 13 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is
certain that a war on the Korean Peninsula must be prevented, the same as
whipping up tensions in the region. He said the most frightening potential
scenario of developments would be a new post-war division of the territory.
In an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) the Russian head
of state admitted that last year the situation on the Korean Peninsula was
on the brink of war.
"We (Russia) are also part of this region. We're not from another
planet. And we do care about what is happening there. And if, God forbid,
a military scenario takes place, it would be a disaster, because we
understand that the use of force tends to spread," said Medvedev.
He also believes that "various means of conducting military operations
may be used here." "This is a very densely populated region, and it would
just be a terrible ordeal for all," the RF president said.
"I believe that there is no military solution to this problem, because
it would take years, decades. There has already been war on the Korean
Peninsula. Enough is enough. I believe the two Koreas should try to reach
an agreement," the Russian leader said.
According to him, "whipping up passions, sabre-rattling, conducting
various kinds of manoeuvres - they just escalate the threat." "Of course,
it is sometimes a method of such a political bargain: we have demonstrated
something here, shown our weapons, we shot in this direction, something
hit somewhere ... But we also understand that at some point the deterrence
mechanisms may fail. And what will happen? A full-fledged military
conflict will be unleashed," Medvedev said. He clarified that in this case
"other laws - the laws of war - will come into effect, and mediation
mechanisms, including the "six-party talks," will no longer work."
In this case, "it would be necessary to make the separation again,
re-establish boundaries, and this will be the worst scenario imaginable,"
the RF head of state is certain.
"Therefore, our task is to make everything to prevent a military
conflict. Mankind has already enough of military conflicts in other
places. In this sense that year was also not the easiest," said Medvedev.
