Songkran Festival on Khao San Road

BANGKOK, April 13 (TNA) - Backpackers’ haven in Bangkok, Khao San Road, has turned itself into a battleground for water fights.
Thai people and foreign tourists are celebrating the traditional Thai New Year alike this week, officially starting from April 13 although the festive mood and atmosphere began earlier and have continued for the whole week.
Khao San Road in the Thai capital has been a major site for Songkran fun. Foreign tourists have joined the street water battle, best known of the Festival. Each geared with water guns in variety of sizes and style thronging the five-kilometer strip of the Khao San.
Khao San’s businesses’ association has prepared cultural shows, beauty pageant contest and musical performances to entertain the visitors. Strict rules to prevent mishaps, abuse and accidents have been enforced. Each visitor is checked before entering Khao San. Hundreds of police and security staff are patrolling on foot to prevent public nuisance.
Khao San business operators have expected about 20,000 visitors each day during this week's Songkran festivity, generating revenues for the community at least Bt4 million a day. (TNA)
