No radiation contamination detected in foods imported from Japan

BANKOK, April 12 (TNA) - Authorities of Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collected samples of Japanese imported foods and did not find any dangerous radiation.

FDA Secretary-General Dr. Pipat Yingseri said officials have been monitoring for radiation contamination in foods imported from Japan at all food and drug checkpoints since March 15, 2011.

According to the report, the FDA has sent up to 274 samples of imported food to the Office of Atoms for Peace for radiation tests, with 20 samples confirmed on Tuesday to be free of hazardous contamination.

There were also 12 samples of fish, one sample each of dumplings, prawns and butter, and five samples of apples.

As several countries have banned Japanese imported foods following the quake-triggered nuclear crisis since March 11, due to concerns over possible radiation contamination, the Thai government insists it will only conduct relevant checks on food imported from the country. (TNA)
