U.S. committed to Pakistan's tribal areas development
Islamabad, Aug 29 PPI: United States along with other members of international community remain committed to development of Pakistan's tribal areas to counter growth of extremist tendencies, a U.S. official said.
U.S. pledged $750 million assistance package for uplift of areas along Pak-Afghan
border to improve living standard of locals and to wean them away from extremist
elements.
The amount to be spent over five years, is aimed at achieving improved governance,
infrastructure development, provision of basic facilities and employment
opportunities for people of tribal areas, he said.
U.S. also committed initially $50,000 to provide humanitarian assistance to
Internally Displaced People (IDPs) affected by ongoing military operation in tribal
areas, an American embassy spokesman said.
He said both countries were cooperating for sustainable development plan for tribal
areas to address conditions that lead to extremism and terrorism.
