Normal situation foreseen during Songkran Festival in Thailand

BANGKOK, April 12 (TNA) - The situation in Thailand during Songkran celebrations this year is expected to be normal, paving the way for the next general election in mid 2011.

When assessing the situation during the traditional Thai New year festival this week, Thawil Pliensri, Secretary General of Thailand's National Security Council (NSC), said that all parties and sectors in the country now appear to be prioritizing the forthcoming general election over the next couple of months--with security and other relevant measures beefed up nationwide to maintain social peace and order and neutrality to ensure a successful election.

Thawil noted he, therefore, believed that the overall situation during nationwide celebrations of the Songkran Festival this week should be normal.

In response to reports that the Thai government has planned to send Myanmar refugees now living at temporary shelters back to their home country, the NSC chief acknowledged that there are more than 110,000 Myanmar refugees sheltering at nine camps in four Thai provinces, and that the Thai government will repatriate them only after providing appropriate education and vocational skills to ensure their potential to make a living when returning to their country.

Meanwhile, the NSC chief said the Thai government and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which have jointly taken care of Myanmar refugees for some 20 years, have resolved the Myanmar refugees should be repatriated, as the development of democracy in their homeland has been growing in the wake of a recent general election.
