Flood devastation persists in Thai south
BANGKOK, April 12 (TNA) - Residents in southern Thailand are still suffering from floods, with houses along the Tapi River remaining under water, while experts estimate damages of southern industries to cost up to 10 billion baht.
The Irrigation Department has installed pumps at the estuary of the Tapi River to speed up water discharge into the sea, one each at Klong Bang Bai Mai and Klong Bang Ya Canals, while two have been operating in Klong Bang Fai Canal. Officials said they expect the drainage of floodwater will take about a week.
Representatives of the Third Naval Area Command and the 411th Ad Hoc Marine Corps have also left for Ao Luek, Muang, Khao Phanom and Plai Phraya districts of Krabi province, as well as Surat Thani’s Chaiyaburi district this afternoon, where up to 1,500 bags of necessities, rice and dried food, will be distributed to flood victims there.
Meanwhile, Payungsak Chartsuthipol, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), said damages to small, medium and large-scaled industrialists, caused by the latest floods, have exceeded all previous flooding. Reported damages from business premises include sawmills, processed food plants, palm oil extraction plants and fishery facilities, which are estimated to cost up to 10 billion baht. The damages were incurred by destroyed plants, machinery and inventories and unmet orders. (TNA)
