BOT forecasts Thai inflation at 2.4 – 4.5% this year

BANGKOK, April 12 (TNA) - Governor of the Bank of Thailand, Prasarn Trairatvorakul says the BOT forecasts overall inflation in 2011 at 2.4 to 4.5 percent, assuming the government floats the price of diesel fuel. If the government continues to cap the price of diesel fuel, the BOT forecasts overall inflation in 2011 at 1.4 to 4 percent.

The BOT governor says the recent floods in southern Thailand affect public spending in the short run, but not the overall economic growth. However, the impact of the natural disasters in Japan on the Thai economy is yet to be determined.

The BOT governor says the baht appreciation last week was due to an influx of foreign capital, a surge in the price of gold, and the appreciation of the euro in relation to the dollar following the European Central Bank’s decision to increase interest rates. However, the baht depreciated in the past couple of days as foreign investors sold shares in the Thai stock market before the Songkran public holiday. (TNA)
