Songkran festival starts to liven up Thailand

BANGKOK, April 12 (TNA) - The Songkran Water Festival has started to liven up Thailand, with people around the country celebrating the long holiday.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration on Tuesday morning brought an important Buddha image on parade for public revering. The procession will stop over at the Wong Wian Yai roundabout, the Santi Chaiprakarn public park, Wat Chana Songkhram temple, and Khao San road. Then it will be placed in front of the City Hall until this Friday. Songkran activities are also confirmed to take place there throughout this week.
A similar procession of Buddha images were also organised in northern Phichit province, where traditional Songkran activities will be held until Saturday.
In northernmost Chiang Rai province, locals were seen holding a ceremony to give thanks to elderly people. Over 2,000 senior citizens participated on the occasion. People also attended scripture sessions with revered monk Phra Maha Wuthichai Wachiramethee, for their good life on the occasion of the Thai New Year.
In the northeastern Nong Bua Lam Phu province, people were seen climbing up 611 stairs to worship Phra Mahamunee Trilokanart Buddha image, at the entrance of the Erawan cave.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department has reported that 365 road accidents killed 29 people and injured 400 others on April 11. It has urged local authorities and police to improve traffic control and management especially on outbound passenger buses. It also urged for the suppression of drunk driving as well as other risky offences, while calling for intensified safety measures at accident-prone areas. (TNA)
