Thai New Year sees Bangkokians flocking out of town

BANGKOK, April 12 (TNA) - Festivities to mark Thailand’s traditional New Year, or Songkran, have sparked an exodus of travellers through Bangkok’s Mo Chit Bus Terminal Tuesday morning.
Oranuch Phuwattanawanich, an authority from the country’s main coach operator, Transport Co., said she expects at least 200,000 more people to leave Bangkok today, although some 800,000 others already left on Friday.
Oranuch noted the company has been able to accommodate large flows of travellers in providing up to 7,900 bus trips on a daily basis, an increase of 2,700 trips over its regular schedule, and therefore, insists services for all clients.
Meanwhile, the authorities said coach safety measures have been prepared in line with the Ministry of Transport’s “road safety year”, in which drivers are banned from any alcohol intake for the period to ensure passenger well-being. (TNA)
