Thai Army Chief calls for national unity, protection for Royal institution

BANGKOK, April 12 (TNA) - In the lead up to Thailand’ s Traditional New Year Celebration, Songkran Water Festival, Thai Army-Commander-in-Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha has called on all Thai people to maintain national unity and help protect the Royal Institution.

General Prayuth Chan-ocha on Tuesday led army personnel to give alms to monks to mark the auspicious Songkran holiday at the Royal Thai Army Headquarters.

Speaking to reporters after the religious ceremony, General Prayuth said he wants to see Thai people cooperate to maintain national unity and protect the Royal Institution. He said he did not want see violence caused by political division.

He said there was only a small section of people who wanted to see violence in the country and Thai people should cooperate to prevent them from hurting the country.

“Everyone should respect the rule of law, and if they work together, peace will be maintained,” the Army Chief said.

Regarding the upcoming general election, General Prayuth said he wants to see all Thai people come out and cast their votes as political problems have to be solved by the people. This way, he believes, the country’s political stability will be boosted.

General Prayuth also emphasised that the Royal Thai Army did not get involved in politics.

As for the celebrations of Songkran Water Festival, General Prayuth said that he had instructed soldiers stationed at rest stops along main roads nationwide to assist travelers in case accidents occur.

According to the army chief, the 4th Army Area Command which supervises the southern part of Thailand will strictly ensure public safety in the violence-plagued southern border provinces as many people are expected to come out and celebrate Songkran Festival.

General Prayuth also warned Songkran revelers not to drink and drive because they will be at increased risk of road accidents, which can cause lots of damage to themselves and other people. (TNA)
