ASEAN FMs urged to enhance ASEAN’s leadership in EAS

BANGKOK, April 12 (TNA) - ASEAN Secretary General Dr Surin Pitsuwan has urged ASEAN Foreign Ministers to enhance ASEAN’s leadership and centrality in the East Asia Summit later this year.

At the Special Informal ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting at the East Asia Summit in Bangkok, the ASEAN Secretary-General said the induction of the United States and Russia into the East Asia Summit (EAS) has tremendous implications on ASEAN; both the US and Russia will bring forth their own agendas in the next summit that might compromise ASEAN’s leadership and centrality.

To ensure that it can maintain its leadership and centrality, Dr. Surin said, ASEAN will have to uphold its own agendas, addressing its own issues in the areas of finance, energy, education, natural disaster, pandemics, and particularly infrastructure in the region.

At the Special Informal ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in a Bangkok hotel April 10-11, the ASEAN foreign ministers also discussed other issues including the Thai-Cambodian border demarcation conflict as well as the territorial disputes in the South-China Sea. (TNA)
