Tokyo subway lines halted pending new powerful earthquake
TOKYO, April 12 (Itar-Tass) - Operations at Tokyo's Narita
international airport, as well as traffic at three high-speed railway
lines and in the Tokyo subway systems were halted Tuesday after a new
powerful earthquake that struck the Tokyo metropolitan area at 08:09 local
time /23:09 GMT Monday/.
The seismic focus of the quake that measured 6.3 points on the
open-ended Richter scale was located 30 kilometers below the surface east
off the island of Boso that adjoins Tokyo in the east.
The most powerful shocks were felt in the cities of Asahi and Katori.
In Tokyo itself, the quake made buildings vibrate. Staff members of
the Itar-Tass bureau, which is located in one of such buildings, felt it
on their own.
A tsunami threat was declared right after the quake but the
authorities called it off later.
In the meantime, reports say this earthquake luckily did not inflict
any damage on Japan's nuclear power plants.
