Investment in Thailand growing

BANGKOK, April 11 (TNA) - Investment in Thailand has kept expanding, with new proposed projects growing by 58 per cent in value in the first quarter of this year, to about 117.8 billion baht.

Thai Industry Minister Chaiwuti Bannawat said on Monday that there were 453 projects, worth some 117.8 billion baht totally, which sought approvals for promotional privileges from the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI), a 58 per cent year-on-year surge.

Chaiwuti noted that most of the new applications seeking the BOI's investment privileges during the January-March 2011 period were petrochemical, paper and plastic projects worth some 30.30 billion baht totally, about a 10-fold jump from the corresponding period last year. Following these areas, are industrial services and utility projects totally worth 27.8 billion baht, including those on power production from waste and solar energy, and metal, machinery and transport equipment projects totally worth about 24.5 billion baht.

Chaiwuti said that there were applications to the BOI for 254 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects, overall worth 70.11 billion baht, seeking the agency's privileges in the first three-month period of this year. 132 of these come from Japan, worth a total of 35.35 billion baht, accounting for some 52 per cent of the total proposed FDI projects during the January-March period. This constitutes a 67 per cent surge from the first quarter last year, and is then followed by those from Singapore and Hong Kong.

The Thai industry minister told journalists the latest just after the latest BOI board meeting, which was chaired by Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Meanwhile, BOI Secretary General Atchaka Sibunruang said that there have been some 109 foreign firms expressing their interest in relocating new investment projects totally worth 130.57 billion baht into Thai industries this year. Most of these are new industrial and utility projects, while many are in the sectors of electronics, automobiles, metals and chemical projects respectively. (TNA)
