Thailand announces new control measures on Japanese imported foods

BANGKOK, April 11 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Public Health has issued new control measures on food products imported from Japan due to concerns over radiation contamination.

Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit said that the ministerial guidelines set safety standards on radiation contamination in food. They state that the level of iodine-131 must not exceed 100 becquerels per kilogram and the levels of cesium-134 and cesium-137 must not exceed 500 becquerels per kilogram.

The measures have been imposed on all foods imported from 12 Japanese prefectures thought to be prone to radiation contamination. These are Fukushima, Gunma, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Miyagi, Yamagata, Niigata, Nagano, Yamanashi, Saitama, Tokyo and Chiba.

Importers must present documents for each product, indicating the type of food, the levels of radiation contamination, and the place where it was produced. The documents must be issued by a relevant government office of Japan, an internationally recognized organization or an assigned laboratory.

Imported foods produced in other areas of Japan must be accompanied with certificates showing their origins, issued by relevant agencies of the Japanese government. (TNA)
