4th Army speeds up rehabilitation for flood-hit Thai South

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, April 11 (TNA) - The 4th Army Area Command, which supervises southern Thailand, is taking a leading role in the immediate repairs to flood-damaged roads to facilitate traffic increases during the traditional Thai New Year, or Songkran festival.
Lieutenant General Udomchai Thammasarorat, commander of the 4th Army, said that during the floods, his troops evacuated flood victims to safe grounds and provided them with food and drinking water. At present, however, such assistance has not been able to reach Nop Phi Tam district of Nakhon Si Thammarat province as roads remain impassable. However, soldiers from the Army's Engineering Department will repair the roads for temporary use, especially for the Songkran festival.
The 4th Army is also responsible for building new houses for flood victims in Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani provinces. It is currently working out the best locations and sizes for new houses with provincial authorities, and expects to complete the project in three months.
Lt Gen Udomchai also said that the soldiers who were helping flood victims did not come from security units in the three southern border provinces, so there would not be a problem regarding security operations in the region.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat went to Surat Thani province to visit 622 local teachers affected by flooding in Phunphin district and handed them each 5,000-baht financial aid.
Chinnaworn also promised to rehabilitate 199 flood-damaged schools and said their damages are initially estimated at about 600 million baht. (TNA)
