Thai exports projected to grow 12.4-16.5% this year

BANGKOK, April 11 (TNA) - Bangkok's University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce released updated projections on Monday, saying that Thailand's exports this year are likely to grow 12.4-16.5 per cent.

Ath Pisalvanich, director of the university's international trade study centre, acknowledged that projected Thai exports this year, worth about 219.48-227.63 billion baht, were cushioned by his centre's rising export indicator, which was at 101.3 in February 2011, 0.16 points higher than January's figure. This, he said would mean that Thailand's exports in the second quarter of this year would continue to grow by 2.4-5.6 per cent, worth some 54.59-56.72 billion baht, on top of the first quarter. This is expected to be boosted by expanding global production--despite a devastating earthquake and tsunami hitting in Japan on March 11.

Ath said that the twin disasters in Japan's Northeast should have only short-term impacts on some Thai exports, including automobiles, and electronic and rubber products; while demand for Thai food and other farm products in the Japanese market was forecast to be even higher to offset supply from the country's disaster-affected areas.

Ath cautioned, however, that there have remained some risk factors for Thai exports in the second quarter of this year, including rising global oil prices caused by political unrest in several oil-rich countries in the Middle East and the North African region and impacts from the latest round of severe and widespread floods in Thailand's southern region. Despite these, he said, the Thai baht has now become more stable.

The international trade study centre chief noted that the projected Thai export growth this year would, nonetheless, be lower than last year's expansion of some 28.1 per cent, and that shipments of Thai products to Libya and Egypt had fallen 22.7 per cent and 17.3 per cent respectively in the first two months of this year due to the political unrest in the two countries.
