Sakhalin, Kurils radiation background within norm
VLADIVOSTOK, April 11 (Itar-Tass) - Background radiation on Sakhalin
and the Kuril Islands on Monday morning ranged from 5 to 15
micro-roentgens per hour, the press service of the Russian Emergency
Situations Ministry's (EMERCOM) main department for the Sakhalin region
reported.
Intensified monitoring of the radiation situation continues by efforts
of 99 stations. The lowest radiation level in populated localities - 6
micro-roentgens per hour - was registered in the town of Severo-Kurilsk on
the island of Paramushir. In Yuzhno-Kurilsk town (Kunashir Island) located
closest to Japan, the background radiation is 10 micro-roentgens, in the
town of Kurilsk on Iturup Island - 11 micro-roentgens, in
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk - 9 micro-roentgens per hour.
No radiation hazard is forecasted on the Sakhalin and Kuril Islands,
there is no threat to the population there.
