PROGRESS OF SINGAPORE-KUNMING RAIL LINK PROJECT HIGHLIGHTED AT AEM MEETING
From Christine Lim
SINGAPORE, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- Progress of the Singapore-Kunming Rail Link (SKRL) project, which cost an estimated US$2 billion, was highlighted during the Asean-Mekong Basin Development Cooperation (AMBDC) ministerial meeting here Friday.
The AMBDC meeting was held in conjunction to the 40th Asean Economic
Ministers (AEM) Meeting in Singapore.
In recognition of the economic potential of the Mekong Basin area,
ministers and representatives of Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos,
Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, met in
Kuala Lumpur in 1996 and agreed on a basic framework to form the AMBDC.
The Mekong River Basin includes part of China, Myanmar, Vietnam and nearly
one-third of Thailand and most of Cambodia and Laos.
A statement released during the AEM meeting said the proposed SKRL will
link eight of the AMBDC countries with 550 kilometres of "missing links" to be
constructed.
At present, the missing links are at various stages of development.
The circular rail link connecting the capital cities will be about 7,000
kilometres in length.
The meeting noted that the 10th Special Working Group meeting on SKRL will
be held on Nov 22 in Putrajaya, Malaysia.
The ministers welcomed the opportunity of convening the SKRL conference and
exhibition to publicise, promote and attract investments for the SKRL in early
2009.
They also expressed appreciation to Malaysia for accepting the invitation
to be permanent chair of the Special Working Group on SKRL.
The ministers recognised that AMBDC process needed to be realigned and
synchronised with the building of the Asean Economic Community (AEC).
At a previous Asean summit, Asean leaders agreed to accelerate the
development of the AEC by 2015 and transform Asean into a region with free
movement of goods, services, investment and skilled labour, and free flow of
capital.
The ministers also took note of the progress made in the implementation of
AMBDC projects.
As at Aug 22, there are 45 projects at various stages of implementation,
and 13 projects still requiring funding worth US$26.5 million.
