1.2 bn dlrs Value of IT Market in Qatar

Doha April 10 (QNA) - The Supreme Council for Communications and Information Technology has said that the total market value of information and communication technology in Qatar amounted to 1.2 billion dollars in 2010.
The Annual Report 2010 of the Council, issued on Sunday said that the telecommunications infrastructure in Qatar has developed steadily over the past years where the growth of the next generation of high-speed communication networks helped improve the services provided and increased the confidence in the technology and its reliability. It also helped in the investment in new satellites and the growth in marine cables that will increase the Internet broad band capacity.
The report said the liberalization of the Qatari telecommunications market yielded good results for individuals and companies.
The revenue of the sector increased by 50 million riyals between 2009 and 2010 to hit 1.1 billion riyals in the mobile telephone sector.
The use of computer at home increased from 71% in 2008 to 89 percent in 2010 and the number of those who own computers rose from 54% in 2008 to 85 percent in 2010.
The use of high-speed internet in homes rose from 41% in 2008 to 70% last year.
The report indicated that 60 percent of companies in Qatar are connected to the Internet while 58% of them are connected to high-speed Internet connections.
