Gagarin's spaceflight becomes real feat in scientific history

PARIS, April 11 (Itar-Tass) -- Yuri Gagarin's first world piloted
spaceflight became a real feat in the world scientific history, the former ESA astronaut Jean-Pierre Haignere told live on the France Inter radio tation. He went on the ESA record longest space mission to the Russian space station Mir.
"The cosmonautics was making its first steps 50 years ago, when
Gagarin made the first world piloted spaceflight. We are aware today that the space hardware sustainability level and the chances to return to the Earth made only 50%. Therefore, it is absolutely not accidental that Yuri Gagarin's spaceflight is called a feat, because it was a really risky and bold experiment," Haignere said.
"We should not forget that Gagarin as several other cosmonauts after him was to leave a small metallic descend capsule of just a few several cubic meters in space and to make a parachute descent at the final stage of the spaceflight after the descent capsule entered the atmosphere. All these factors complicated the first manned spaceflight. We should not forget that Gagarin was on a sole spaceflight and he would have made his own decisions if any dangerous emergency situation had emerged unexpectedly," the French astronaut pointed out.
"For our generation Gagarin's spaceflight became something absolutely unbelievable. This was a dream that came true. The first manned spaceflight excited all specialists, including those from the United States of a just burgeoning space industry. We should not forget that only four years passed between the launch of the first Soviet satellite and Gagarin's spaceflight. The Soviet Union has made a great technological breakthrough for this period of time," Haignere remarked.
"I am glad that France and Russia are developing cooperation. A
particularly symbolic event was held at the Kourou spaceport, where the Russian Soyuz launch site was passed to the Arianespace concern, which will operate the launches of this famous rocket," Jean-Pierre Haignere said. "I hope that the day will come when the Russian Soyuz spaceships will be launched from the Kourou spaceport for the ESA piloted missions.
Russia and France took into account this possibility in the current Soyuz project at the French Guiana spaceport, though this option was not included in the initial tasks of the project. This prospect was included in the technological solutions under the project that will make us prepared for political and economic prerequisites to appear for piloted spaceflights at one day," the French astronaut underlined.
