LPG PRICE HIKE AGAINST THE LAW, BABEL LAW MAKERS SAY
Pangkalpinang,Aug 29 (ANTARA) - Chairman of Commission B of the Bangka Belitung (Babel) Legislative Assembly Syamsiar Hamid said increase in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) by state oil and gas firm Pertamina was against the law.
"The Constitutional Court (MK) has revoked article 28 para 2 of Law No 22 of 2001 regarding Oil and Gas which stipulated that the price of fuel oil and gas depends on the market mechanism," he said in Pangkalpinang Friday.
He added that the government needs to be firm because Pertamina's decision of raising the price of LPG in 12-kg and 50-kg containers is against the decision of the Constitutional Court.
"Pertamina has no right to set the retail price of LPG, which is the right of the government, which has allowed the state oil and gas company to increase the price of LPG several times only two months apart, which had caused suffering to the people," he said.
"It appears that the government lacked objectivity in dealing with the problem, and tended to side with Pertamina and pay no attention to the sufferings of the people following the LPG price hike," he said.
He said that Pertamina lacked sensitivity to the fate of the people by raising the price of LPG, because the public is fighting the post economic crisis prices of daily nessaries, and now hit again by the LPG price hike.
"The decision of the LPG price hike is a solution which only benefits Pertamina, while the fate of the public is growing worse," he said.
He also believed that the government will not be successful in providing subsidized LPG in 3-kg container to low-income people.
"I think it is a matter of time when subsidized LPG in 3-kg containers will also disappear from the market following the increase in the price of LPG in 12-kg containers," he said.
He also believed that the problem did not only concern the price, but also in the distribution of LPG which lacked good management.
In the meantime chairman of Commission D of the Babel Legislative Assembly Sarpin said that Pertamina's decision to raise the price of LPG may obstruct the implementation of the kerosene to gas conversion program
