PRESIDENT SUPPORTS SPECIAL MPR COMMISSION TO STUDY AMENDMENT OF THE CONSTITUTION
Jakarta, Aug 29 (ANTARA)- President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has supported a proposal to set up a special commission in the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) to study whether or not it is necessary to amend the Constitution.
Speaking in observing the 63rd anniversary of MPR here Friday night, the president said an amendment to the constitution is important, so there should be a special commission to study this.
"Of course I agree on the importance of such special commission, and only the MPR which can realize the commission," the head of state said.
Formerly a 1945 constitution amendment was studied by MPR's working body, he said, adding that this should be carried out by a non-adhoc committee.
"We don't want that the past experience to handle such a fundamental matter to recur. Some 11 years ago as a member of the House of Representatives, I worked for several months to formulate the fundamental one relating to our state national policy (haluan negara)," he said.
Should the special committee be established, the study of an ammendment of the constitution of course can be conducted comprehensively because it will involve a number of experts and practitioners.
