SECURITY CONDITIONS IN RUNUP TO 2009 POLLS RELATIVELY STABLE : BIN CHIEF

Brebes, Central Java, Aug. 29 (ANTARA) - National security conditions in the runup to the 2009 general elections are relatively stable, State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Chief Syamsir Siregar said here Friday.

"So far there has been no serious threat. However, there are several legislative processes which could hamper the implementation of the 2009 polls ," Siregar said after giving a speech at a graduation function at Al Hikmah Islamic Boarding School here.

Prolonged discussions in the House of Representatives on election-related procedural matters could hamper the implementation of the polls, he said.

Citing an example, he said there was a discourse to revise Law No. 10/2008 on General Elections, especially the law's provisions on how to formally confirm a candidate's election.
Siregar called on all parties to support the general elections and help create a conducive security situation in the runup to and after the elections.
