Thai PM, DPM visit people in flood-hit areas

BANGKOK, April 9 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban visited flood victims in Thailand's southern region, but in separate areas, on Saturday, as the Thai Ministry of Public Health updated the flood death toll at 63 over the past three weeks.

Abhisit visited flood victims in Nakhon Si Thammarat, the hardest-hit among 10 flood-stricken provinces in the Thai South since March 23, and those in nearby Surat Thani. The Thai premier handed over relief supplies and inspected damage in several areas in the two provinces.

In the meantime, Suthep visited flood victims in Krabi Province, where he called on donations to support a government-funded project on building knock-down houses for local flood-hit households at a cost of some 240,000 baht each, saying that construction of the new houses is expected to be completed by April 20.

Meanwhile, Thai Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said that total flood fatalities in the South had reached 63 in seven flood-battered provinces as of 10pm Friday night, including 27 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 12 each in Surat Thani and Krabi, six in Phattalung, three in Chumphon and two in Trang--where some one-metre floodwater remained at some areas. Jurin noted that more medical teams had been dispatched to the flood-stricken areas to provide both physical and mental treatments for affected people. (TNA)
