Songkran Festival boosts trade at Thai-Cambodian border

BANGKOK, April 9 (TNA) - Upcoming Songkran Festival celebrations to mark Thailand’s traditional New Year have lit up businesses along the Thai-Cambodian border, with two-way trade soaring to almost 30 million baht daily.

In Thailand's eastern Chantaburi Province, Cambodian and Vietnamese people have doubled their purchase orders from the Thai side to now some 30 million baht daily, from about 15 million baht earlier. Local traders attributed the surge to the fact that Songkran is the largest yearly celebration in the region, marked by festivities, dining, and shopping.

Isiwutthi Tangkiart, chief of Thailand-Cambodia Border Traders and Tourism Association, said among top commodities currently on high demand include instant noodle packs, which have doubled to almost 10,000 boxes, from some 4,000 earlier. (TNA)
