Songkran Festival to boost Thai tourism

BANGKOK, April 9 (TNA) - The number of international visitors to Thailand is projected to reach 17 million this year, a 7-per cent rise on top of last year’s figure, boosted by favourable conditions in the Kingdom.
KASIKORNTHAI Research Centre (KRC) gave the positive outlook, citing signs of Thailand's tourism recovery since the second half of last year, which pulled through until the first quarter of this year and will be further boosted, particularly, from next week’s traditional Thai New Year, or the annual Songkran Festival, with nationwide celebrations.
The leading Thai private think-tank also forecast the country's second quarter tourism growth at a 20 per cent surge on top of the first quarter, with total international visits to the Kingdom to exceed the 3.4 million mark, cushioned by promising long-term tourism prospect in Asia and the Middle East.
The Bangkok-based KRC said international visitors to Thailand in the first half of this year is likely to grow by 11 per cent on top of 2010’s figure, totalling at about 8.4 million people and circulating some 3.15 billion baht within the country and possibly as much as 6.5 billion baht by the end of this year.
