Thailand takes part in ASEAN-Japan ministerial meeting
BANGKOK, April 9 (TNA) - Thailand, as a member country of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), is taking part in the ASEAN-Japan foreign ministerial meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, on Saturday.
The regional emergency meeting was set to mainly discuss ASEAN-Japan cooperation on dealing with disasters in the region in the wake of a massive earthquake and tsunami striking Japan's northeastern region on March 11 with radiation leaks consequently.
Assistance to disaster-stricken Japan and coordination to ensure safety of Japanese food and of nuclear power plants in the region were also expected to be discussed at the regional forum.
Japanese Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto was also believed to tell ASEAN of Tokyo's efforts to stop the radiation leaks from its troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, some 250 kilometres northeast of the Japanese capital.
Indonesia, the current chair of the 10-nation ASEAN which was also hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami in late 2004, proposed the special ASEAN-Japan meeting following the March 11 disaster in Japan, which killed nearly 13,000 people and left nearly 15,000 others missing. (TNA)
