ASEAN Foreign Ministers to meet in Bangkok to prepare their role in EAS

BANGKOK, April 9 (TNA) - Ministerial representatives of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will discuss ASEAN’s cooperation in an East Asia summit (EAS) set to be held in Bangkok next Monday (Apr 11).

ASEAN foreign ministers are scheduled to participate in the Special Informal ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on East Asia Summit or the EAS in the Thai capital, expected to carry out strategic issues for ASEAN’s topics of discussion in the future East Asia Summit.

Furthermore, future outlook of the EAS after expanding its cooperation to Russia and United States will also be discussed, as well as other strategic initiatives.

According to Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Department of ASEAN, Thailand will use this opportunity to support the success of Indonesia as the current chair of ASEAN, to highlight the ASEAN Centrality and to make EAS a premiere forum to raise ASEAN’s profile and contribution to the global arena.

During the meeting, the regional delegates are also expected to exchange views on regional and international issues and other matters such as preparation for the18th ASEAN Summit in Jakarta on May 7-8 May, 2011 and the dates for the 19th ASEAN Summit and related summit in Bali, Indonesia. Most ASEAN foreign Ministers have confirmed that they will attend the Bangkok meeting together with other delegates. (TNA)
