RI NOT TO MEDDLE IN XINJIANG CONFLICT : ENVOY

Beijing, Aug 29 (ANTARA) - Indonesia will not meddle in the conflict in the north-western Chinese special autonomous region of Xinjiang where a secessionist movement has become active, although the majority of the area's population, like Indonesia's, are Muslims, a diplomat said.
"Indonesia by no means wants to meddle in China's internal affairs, including the alleged secessionist rebellion in Xinjiang," Indonesian Ambassador to China Sudrajat said here on Friday.
In fact, the Indonesian government was deeply concerned about the latest situation in Xinjiang and hopes the problem can be resolved peacefully and quickly, he said.
Indonesia adheres to the principle that Xinjiang is an integral part of China, he said.
"Indonesia highly cares about the integrity of a nation, including the question of Xinjiang," he said.
He said Indonesia supported any effort to keep the territory of a nation intact and did not want to see any rift or uprising.
"In essence, Indonesia will never and does not want to meddle in China's internal affairs though the vast majority of Xinjian population like Indonesia's are Muslims," he said.
Earlier, DPA reported Chinese police had detained 500 Uighurs in the Xinjiang region over the past two weeks.
The Chinese government accused Uigur fighters of inciting the Xinjiang unrest with the aim of disrupting the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
