Earthquake hits southern Kuril Islands causing no casualties or
VLADIVOSTOK, April 9 (Itar-Tass) -- A 5.3 earthquake hit the southern
Kuril Islands early on Saturday. Tremors were felt in the Malokurilskoye
village on the Shikotan Isalnd (with a magnitude of 4 points) and in the
city of Yuzhno-Kurilsk on the Kunashir Island (with a magnitude of 1 and 2
points).
The Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismological station reports that the epicentre
was located 110 kilomerters to the east of Shikotan at a depth of about 60
kilometers under the Pacific Ocean bed. The tremors conitnued for ten
seconds. No casualties or destruction have been reported in Malokurilskoye.
