Thai PM to speed up rehabilitation in flood-damaged areas

BANGKOK, April 9 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has promised to speed up rehabilitation for flood-damaged areas in Thailand's southern region.
Abhisit said that he had ordered authorities concerned to report flood damages in the Thai South to the Thai Cabinet next week, assessing initially that the rehabilitation would cost his government some 10 billion baht.
The Thai premier revealed that he had also ordered all flood-damaged rural roads and bridges to be temporarily repaired by Saturday and a quick restoration of tap water supplies in flood-hit areas.
Abhisit confirmed that surveys of flood damages would be concluded as soon as possible and results would be presented to the Thai Cabinet next week, saying that he expected most people in flood-stricken areas should resume their normal life by next week, except those in Pak Phanang District of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province where flood problems persist.
Meanwhile, Thai Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said that floods were subsiding but remained in the six southern provinces, including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Surat Thani, Trang, Krabi and Songkhla, and that so far, the southern flooding had killed 61 people comprising of 27 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 12 in Surat Thani, 10 in Krabi, six in Phatthalung, three in Chumphon, two in Trang, and one in Phangnga; while one person had remained missing.
