UN Mission expresses concern over violence in Asharf Camp, calls for restrain
Baghdad (NINA) – The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) expressed concern over reports that violent events have taken place in Ashraf Camp, resulted in the killing and wounding of a number of persons. It stressed the need for exerting efforts to stop violence and to work together toward solving all issues peacefully.
In a statement issued on Friday, Apr. 8, UNAMI called for self restrain and respect of human rights, urging the Iraqi government to provide humanitarian help and medical aid to the Camp's residents.
The statement went on saying; The mandate of the UN Missions in helping Iraq includes consolidating human rights, while the UNAMI's Human Rights Office regularly evaluates the situation inside the Camp and its vicinities. The UN continues it call for protecting the residents of Camp Ashraf from forced deportation or resettling them that contradicts the UN's principle of forced deportation.
Earlier in the day, a security source announced that armed clashes took place between Iraqi military force and members of the Iranian Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) in which clubs and sharp weapons are used protesting the deployment of Iraqi military forces in new check points installed within the Camp's vicinities resulted in a number of casualties in both sides.
Source at Baquba General Hospital said that eight Iraqi military men, including five officers, have been admitted after the clashes between Iraqi Army forces and members of MKO in Ashraf Camp.
The 6 square km camp is located in Mansouriya area, 20 km north of Khalis district; it was established in 1986 during the Iraq-Iran War that was started in 1980.
Since then the Camp has been developed into a town in which members of MKO members and their families are living. At the end of 2009 Iraq government decided to remove the MKO members to another place, but they have rejected that. / End.
Hakeem: Iraq needs slender federal government, local governments with wide authorities
Baghdad (NINA) – Leader of the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council (SIIC), Ammar al-Hakeem asserted that distributing the authorities of provincial governments and expands participation in running the country is right way to help in reconstruction.
During his visit to Thi-Qar province and meeting with local officials, Hakeem said, "Today Iraq is not in need for 47 ministries, rather it need a slender government that supervises performance along side strong local government with wide authorities."
He added, "The SIIC along side other political forces exerted efforts to pass Provincial Councils Law by last Parliament, to enable local governments practice their roles, but unfortunately the Law has not been activated yet." / End.
Dabbagh: The government imposed law, order in the vicinities of Ashraf Camp
Baghdad (NINA) – Minister of State and Spokesman for the Iraqi Government, Ali Dabbagh, said that the security force charged with protecting Ashraf Camp in Diyala province has imposed law and order after elements of the Iranian Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) broke out of the camp throwing rocks at security men.
Dabbagh added, "The incident resulted in wounding five of the and instigating state of chaos, compelling our security forces to interfere to make MKO elements return back into the Camp."
He warned the Organization's members not to overstep law and order or will be treated in accordance with laws applied in Iraq.
