Monitor lizards seized by Thai customs before smuggled to China

BANGKOK, April 8 (TNA) - Thai Customs Department officials on Friday confiscated 1,800 monitor lizards worth 1.8 million baht before they were smuggled to China.

Director-General of the Thai Customs Department Prasong Poontanes said a customs officer in Pranburi district of Thailand's eastern Prachinburi Province seized the 1,800 monitor lizards worth 1.8 million baht at a checkpoint in Samroiyod.

The lizards were to be exported to China, where they would be used as an ingredient in a power-boosting medicine.

Monitor lizards, which originated from Malaysia and Indonesia, are nearly extinct. According to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), monitor lizards are protected under the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992. (TNA)
