Thai population reaches 65.4 million
BANGKOK, April 8 (TNA) - The latest census shows Thailand's population has now reached 65.4 million--though growth rates are slowing down.
Wibulthat Suthanthanakit, Director of the National Statistical Office, said on Friday that the 2010 census has found the Thai population rose to 65.4 million from 60.6 million in 2000.
In 2010, there were 33.3 million women who accounted for 50.9 per cent of the total population and 32.1 million men, some 49.1 per cent of the total population. The Thai population was the fourth biggest among Southeast Asian nations after Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
However, the censuses which are conducted every decade have showed that growth rates of the Thai population have slowed down since 1960, dropping from 2.7 per cent yearly in 1960 to 0.77 per cent annually in 1970 due to lower birth rates.
According to the latest census, there were 20.3 million households in Thailand as of last year, each of which comprised of 3.2 people on average, showing that the Thai households were smaller compared with those surveyed in 2000 when each household consisted of 3.9 people on average.
Biggest Thai households were in the country's southern region, where each family had 3.54 people on average; while smallest Thai households were found in Bangkok, where each household had 2.9 members on average. (TNA)
