Ban on over-the-counter selling of antibiotics demanded
Karachi, April 07, 2011 (PPI): Pakistan is amongst a few countries of the world where antibiotics drugs are sold over-the-counter and the government should make laws to ban this malpractice to save health and lives of citizens, demanded speakers at the 20th International Children’s Health Conference, here Wednesday evening.
They urged the people to stop misuse of antibiotics, as self medication and excess or less use of it, both are dangerous to health. They also urged the government to make legislation to ban sell of antibiotics on counter without physician’s prescription.
The conference was, presided over by the World Health Organization’s representative in Pakistan, Dr. Guido Sabatinelli.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief guest and Vice Chancellor, Dow University of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Masood Hameed Khan said that the government should make legislation to stop selling of antibiotics on counter without prescription of registered physicians so that the trend of self-medication and free usage of antibiotics could be stopped which was also a major cause of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Opposing to self medication he urged the people to refrain from taking medicines by themselves as they did not know the exact potency, correct dose and duration of a medicine which was quite harmful to their health, he said, adding that any antibiotics be taken under the instruction of a physician.
He urged the audience in general and the students in particular that they should create awareness among communities and other students in their schools about the danger of self medication.
He congratulated the WHO on the selection of an important subject for World Health Day and the role it was playing for health cause and appreciated the work, done by its executives for health in Pakistan.
Commending the speeches of young delegates, delivered by them in conference, he said that having listen to them he had nothing to add as they had covered all the aspects of the under discussion topic in their speeches, which were filled with knowledge, statistic and complete data.
“Look at their vocabulary, accent and knowledge of the children, we are no less than other countries and going well irrespective of negative propaganda against us”, he said, adding: “Listen to them my confidence on brilliant future of Pakistan has further enhanced”.
Earlier Mrs. Sadia Rashid, President, Hamdard Foundation Pakistan in her key-note speech on the theme of conference said that today’s Children Health Conference was an important milestone for us, because it marked the completion of the second decade that Hamdard had been holding these conferences. Hakim Said had started this health conference to create awareness of health in children, because of his deep love for children. Secondly he believed that if you really wanted to bring about change, you must catch minds when they were young. Thirdly, that health was one of the most basic needs of a nation, as was education, and these conferences combined both. Fourthly, that for progress in any field, all players in that field must unite and work together towards their goal, so that he always supported the efforts of the WHO, she said, adding: “That is why the Hamdard International Children’s Health Conference has always been held either on, or one day before World Health Day.
Analysing the subject of health conference she said the reasons for resistance - building were many, but chief among them were overuse and misuse of drugs and both by the physicians and the patients. Patients often did not complete prescribed course of antibiotics when they felt better, and as a result a state of AMR was created.
She said that pharmaceutical companies should spend money on the research of new medicines so that antimicrobial resistance and its global spread could be controlled and successful remedies for diabetes and hypertension could be made to give relief to those patients who had to take medicines for these ailments for whole life.
Dr. Guido Sabatinelli in his presidential address said that excess or lesser usage of antibiotics were responsible for antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Antibiotics must be used in ailments and that too on the advice of a physician.

All speeches were good but he was impressed by the speeches of Naveen Faisal, Araj John and Aymon Vardah, because they touched the core of the subject, he said, adding that nowadays the use of pencilling was rampant while it was not so much 40 years ago, which was now creating problems for human beings.
He said that he was a new comer in Pakistan and did not meet many people so far, but when he met with Mrs. Sadia Rashid in connection of invitation to this conference, he was much impressed by her fascinating personality.
Nineteen child delegates also spoke on the occasion. They said that infections caused by resistance micro - organizing often failed to respond to conventional treatment resulting in greater risk of life. AMR was actually the resistance of a micro - organism to an anti-microbial medicine to which if was previously sensitive and the misuse of antibiotics caused Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) which has now become global phenomenon.
