Japanese food in Bangkok free from radioactive contamination

BANGKOK, April 8 (TNA) - Bangkok Governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra says that imported food products sold in Bangkok have been found to be free from radioactive contamination; so they are safe for consumers.

The Bangkok governor declared the food safety in the capital after he inspected food products and raw ingredients in department stores and restaurants in the city which had been imported from Japan.

In the wake of a massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan's Northeast on March 11 with radiation leaks from a nuclear power plant consequently, people are concerned over buying and consuming food products imported from Japan.

After the inspection on Thursday, the Bangkok governor said that raw ingredients and fresh food products from Japan had been free from radioactive contamination, as Thailand's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Office of Atoms for Peace had already tested them. Besides, the management of the department stores and restaurants had informed him that their products had been ordered in January and their life was six months.

Meanwhile, Bangkok Deputy Governor Dr. Malinee Sukvejjaworakit said that officials of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had also used radiation detectors to check food products imported from Japan at 65 stores and restaurants in the city and had not found any dangerous level of radiation.
