Japan Financial Firms Urged to Compile Power-Saving Plans
Tokyo, April 8 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Financial Services Agency urged financial institutions on Thursday to formulate sweeping plans to conserve electricity in preparation for expected power shortages in eastern Japan in the summer peak season, informed sources told Jiji Press.
The FSA made the instructions as the government plans to compile within April a package of comprehensive power-conserving measures for summer this year, which may include a 25 pct year-on-year cut in electricity use by large-lot industrial and commercial users, in order to avoid a sudden large-scale power outage.
On Thursday afternoon, the agency summoned executives of industry organizations for banks, securities houses, and life and nonlife insurance firms to explain progress in the government's discussions on power-saving measures and the FSA's views.
The industry groups included the Japanese Bankers Association, the Regional Banks Association of Japan, the Japan Securities Dealers Association and the Life Insurance Association of Japan.
The FSA urged companies, which currently serve as chairs of the groups, to compile data on the industries' peak-hour power consumption volumes and electricity use at each member company's headquarters, branches, computing centers and other operational facilities, according to the sources.
The FSA then asked the industries to put forward by Monday afternoon specific energy-saving measures like turning off air conditioners and turning down or off lighting, the sources said.
The industries were also asked to take other measures including the use of in-house power generation systems and consider medium- to long-term measures such as moving head office functions, the sources said.
The eastern parts of Japan are expected to face serious power supply shortages in the summer because Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s <9501> Fukushima No. 1 and No. 2 nuclear power stations and many of its thermal power plants in the region have been shut down due to damage caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
Banks and life insurers are considering plans to suspend operations at eastern Japan branches by rotation to slash power consumption.
