Uncensored Quiet Flows the Don to be presented in Moscow.

MOSCOW (Itar-Tass) - Uncensored edition of famous And Quiet
Flows the Don epic by Mikhail Sholokhov will be presented by the Russian
State Library on Friday to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the novel.
Sholokhov's daughter Svetlana said Soviet censors dropped over 1800
words from the novel, introduced over 10 thousand changes, and deleted and
replaced whole pieces of text.
"The editors who knew little about the life of Cossacks mercilessly
edited everything they wanted," she said.
"The publication is the result of many-year work of numerous people
who joined effort for the sake of returning the original text of the first
two books of the immortal work by Mikhail Sholokhov to the Russian and
world literature," Chairman of the Sholokhov Committee Andrei Chernomyrdin
told Tass.
Sholokhov was often accused of plagiarism as he wrote the epic at the
age of 23. However an analysis of the manuscript found in 1999 has
unambiguously proved Sholokhov's authorship. The writing paper dates back
to the 1920s: 605 pages are in Sholokhov's own hand, and 285 are
transcribed by his wife Maria and sisters.
The novel won the Stalin Prize in 1941 and its author won the Nobel Prize in 1965.
