Afghani toddler dies as diggers, insurgents battle

(AAP) April 7 - A young Afghan boy, wounded in a firefight between Australian soldiers and insurgents, has died as a result of his injuries, Defence says.
The boy, believed to be 23 months old, was shot on March 27 during the exchange between the insurgents and Australian troops, partnered by Afghan police, near the village of Sah Zafar.
The child, who suffered gunshot wounds to his upper body, was evacuated to a medical facility in Tarin Kowt, before being moved to a medical facility in Kandahar.
Defence moved the boy's father and other family members to the hospital, where his condition continued to deteriorate.
Following consultation with medical staff, his family made the decision to turn off life support on April 2.
Defence will not release any further details about the child at this stage, out of respect for his family.
